I actually never put in a method to remove an item so that you have nothing equipped in that spot. (Heh...) What you might want to do is buy a cheap item to equip into that spot so you can get the one you want out. You'll have a lot more stuff to swap around later in the game, so it shouldn't be much of a problem then.
