Mystic Sword was done with a stop motion feature on my camera (records 1/4 second shots). That's it! I've only recently recorded them digitally.
For the newer stuff, I actually do it the same way, but then run the film into my computer though my video capture device, extract the frames into a series of image files, paint in the effects through Photoshop, reassemble the frames at a higher frame rate (using a simple freeware program called "pjBmp2Avi"), then put everything together in Video Studio 8, which came with my video capturer.
