If your host allows exteral linking it's okay. His PHP probably sees if it has a domain in the URL. If not it treats it as a relative path. But that's just a guess...
If you don't have a place to host images, register a geocities account and upload the images with a .txt extension. You'll be able to like to them and they will appear as images.
