For some reason, this is like QuickTime's best kept secret. Couldn't find this in the help files or their website, and most Google searches result in Mac only instructions. (Heh...)
To get soundfonts working in Windows XP, first you need to copy the SF2 files to the (rather obscure) location C:\WINDOWS\system32\QuickTime
Now when you open up QuickTime, go to 'Edit' -> 'Preferences' -> 'QuickTime Preferences'. This will open up a new window, from which you can select 'Music' from the drop down list and a list of your sound fonts will appear. Just select the one you want to try out, close the window and restart QuickTime with the MIDI you want to hear. (Note this is with version 6.5.2.)
