Learning a language like C++ really can put you on better grounds with RPG Code. Probably the best way, however, is to practice. Work on a small practice game first without complex programming (--and finish it. Don't just release a demo and quit.) You'll find that you'll be on better grounds with all aspects of the Toolkit (including programming) after doing so. Just work your way up from simple tasks to more complex ones.
