The game is definitely possible, but the AI would be a nightmare to design. One approach is the way I did the tic-tac-toe program on the Shack. You make a hidden "temp" board, try every move the computer can do, and evaluate that board to take the best move. Probably the best way to evaluate would be to assign point values to each piece and add them up for both sides. It'd be well worth it if you can pull it off though.
So you mean it's not classic chess, but you travel from town to town collecting different pieces? Sounds good!
