The DA2 walkthroughs have been moved to their own page. Obviously, I will not be making any more of these as I think these give a pretty good introduction to the game and there's not much interest anyway.
The entire soundtracks for both Dark Age 2 and Dark Age EX are now up for download as individual track links. Also just for fun I put up enemy sprite dump pages for bothgames.
First, I must apologize to the nostalgic folks. But the old website was simply just... horrifying to look at and navigate. (Frankly it was getting to the point where I was just plain embarrassed to link to my games because the blasted website was so outlandishly bad.) So I whipped up a design that I think looks decent while keeping the whole Dark Age spirit intact. So now I have a nice, permanent site to show off these old classics.
Some new features you might be interested in are a News RSS Feed and Message Board RSS. Should help keep those of us who still poke around the board connected and alert you next time I decide to come out of the blue and post an update.
I'm sure folks are wondering if a massive site overhaul suggests another game in production. Don't want to start any rumors here-- Nope, nothing at the moment. Subscribe to the RSS though, and I'll post if I ever get back into it!
If you're reading this, that means the domain has switched to the new server. There were some bugs I had to iron out since the site's code is so old and we're running on a newer version of PHP now, so let me know if something no longer works.
It's been a long time since I've posted an update and it's probably obvious to any faithful visitors that I've retired from game development. I've made two complete games (three if you want to count the remake) and after taking an extended vacation (and doing much thinking) I realize I feel completely satiated. My work here is done!
I will of course remain in touch as I always have for game questions, though I will admit finer details have started to become foggy with age. (Heh...) I just moved this site to the same server as some of my current ones, so no worries about it disappearing any time soon. In fact, fans of my medieval/fantasy/magic style of writing may be interested in my webcomic. It's kind of like Dark Age with cartoon animals.
That's it! Thanks for reading, thanks for commenting, thanks for buying, thanks for sending in bug reports, thanks for patiently waiting, thanks for being so faithful... and thanks for playing!
- Xorlak
P.S. Somebody email me when someone makes a game bigger than DA2, will ya? (Heh...)
Well since I'm still on break from any game development whatsoever, it would probably make sense to stop these monthly updates until I'm actually working on something. Seems a shame since I haven't missed one since I started back in November 2001. But the two-word posts are only fun when I actually have something to back them up. (Heh...)
So front page updates will likely be infrequent for a while. (I'll continue to update the poll with lame questions, though. Heh...)
Whoa!! Now hold on a second here! Just what is that link up there? Some sort of poorly drawn webcomic!? And why does that mysterious cloaked guy's beard look so darn familiar? Could this possibly be the beginnings of some sort of side story from Dark Age 2 that never made it into the final game? Could these questions be more rhetorical?
(Heh...)
No promises on the update schedule on this comic thing. Just sort of an experiment... I'll try to put a new page up every few days to a week or so, but we'll see.
And yo! Dark Age Legends needs more players. We're looking for people who love typing. A lot. Go. Join. Now.
Hey, folks. I'm taking a break from game development for a while. Not sure how long it'll be. Need to sit back and consider some major things anyway (like if I really like my battle system or if I need to throw everything out and start anew).
*Gasp* *Whine* *Complain*
Yeah, yeah. Go play DA2 again. It's good for ya. (Heh...)
The rudimentary stages of Dark Age 3 are progressing well, albeit slowly. I've been spending a lot of time lately doing debug work for the Toolkit dev. team (basically trying to get what I've written for DA3 to work with the upcoming TK 3.0.7). The dev. team has been very responsive in taking care of issues I've brought to them, and certain parts of the game are running much more nicely than in the current 3.0.6. Although DA3 isn't really moving forward much during this period (since I'm spending my time going over code I've already written), this does mean that DA3 will be produced on the latest TK version, and not stuck on some older version due to backwards compatibility issues (like erm... both DA2 and DAX. Heh...)
Been pretty busy lately, so nothing major this month. Except I am pleased to announce that RDemusX, maker of Mansions of the Moon, will also be offering help in certain graphical areas of DA3.
Hmmm, this site first went online in early September 2001, albeit in a much cruder form on angelfire.com. It's been five years. Not bad! Most of that time the site has been hosted by Mystic Software. Hats off to Spyder for providing the best TK game hosting service around for all this time!
Yes, Dark Age 3 is indeed underway. I put a bit more info up on the DA3 page. I'm pleased to anounce that Khin of Pigments Arts will be doing sprite work and character designs for the game, and of course Rueben will be returning, fresh with University degree in hand, with an all new musical score. I'm also talking with another artist. More info later...
Okay, so when you get over 40 spam emails per day, it's time to do something about it. (Heh...) From now on, if you need to contact me at please put "[DA]" somewhere in the subject line or it won't get past my new filter and I won't receive your email altogether (although you should in turn receive an automated message that instructs you to do so).
So Dark Age 2 has been out for over two and a half years. I had fun making CDs and selling them, and I think the whole commercial thing proved a point about this little game development system called The RPG Toolkit. Seriously, has anyone else actually made money off of a game maker? (Heh...) But really, it's you guys who made it happen. I'd like to send out a big thanks to the 24 DA2 CD owners scattered across the United States, Canada, and the UK!
Anyway, I have enough money now, so I figured 'what the heck'. The rest of you can have it for free. You'll all need to be familiar with the story anyway to make... certain future experiences... more enjoyable... (Heh...)
Remember that the game only runs at a decent speed for only about half the people the way it is set up now. The other half may want to try out the alternate actkrt2.dll that's on that same download page.
Did a couple more minor tweaks to the message board throughout the month, which can be read about here.
I'm sure many of you are anxious to hear if I'm working on my next game related project or not. The truth is... not really. Just been really preoccupied the past few months, and it looks like it may be that way for a while.
On the other hand, I've received a lot of minor bug reports for DAX within the past few months. So it looks like it may be due for one final minor bugfix patch. The reports have slowed down, so I may start working on this soon. If you see anything wrong that hasn't been reported on the bug board be sure to let me know!
The message board has been totally revamped. I basically split the board into four categories, adding a separate board for bug reports, off topic posts, etc. You can read the details here.
I put up a new Dark Age Chronicles screenshot, though. In this one you can see a new technique I've been messing around with in Photoshop in which I replace a solid color background with a computer generated one. Gives a nice effect when animated.
Oh and in case there are Mystic Sword fans (heh...), I'll probably have episode 4 up by this weekend.
I've been tinkering with my next game a bit. (Just a bit!) Nothing ready to show just yet, but perhaps I'll be able to put up a page for it in a few months...
I'm pleased to announce a new branch of the website: the movies section! I've actually been doing clay animation longer than designing games, and having finally obtained some server space of my own to upload non-Toolkit related material, I'd like to bring all my projects, game and animation related, under one (website) roof.
First, I'd like to draw your attention to my current claymation project: Dark Age Chronicles!
Second, you can check out one of my old projects, Mystic Sword. Looking back at it five and a half years later, I think it's safe to say it turned out pretty cheesy (heh...), but it's worth a few good laughs. I'll be uploading a new episode of Mystic Sword once a month, so stay tuned!
If you haven't figured it out, I'm still in the "in between games" zone. (Heh...) Apart from some minor tinkering, I haven't done much with my next game related project. Been sort of busy with other things. I'm not sure how much longer it will be.
I can say this, though. It's going to be a big one...
The separate FAQ pages for each game were somewhat confusing, so I combined them into one simple FAQ page and added a couple of questions along the way. Also made a few minor bugfixes to the site.
Feel like writing? Announcing the Dark Age Guides section! I'm now accepting player-written walkthroughs, game tips, and strategies for all three Dark Age games.
Also, a bug made its way into the last DAX patch. I uploaded a corrected version, which you can download now. (Thanks, OBCT!)
The Dark Age EX v2.1 upgrade patch is released! This patch (hopefully) addresses the issues some people have been having getting the game to run, fixes a few minor bugs, and adds a new "Easy Mode" for all the softies out there. (Heh...)
If you've been having trouble getting Dark Age EX to run, take a look at the troubleshooting page. (Fixed installation files coming soon!) On a related note, keep those bug reports/typos coming in!
Also, I'm in the process of redesigning the site completely from scratch. It won't look a whole lot different on the outside, but it'll be a lot easier for me to maintain. Stay tuned for new features!
A much smaller filesize MIDI version of Dark Age EX is now available for modem users. The only difference from the larger version is that the MP3s have been swapped with MIDI versions of the same music.
I missed a small file in the Dark Age EX installation. Anyone who has downloaded the game before this post, please put this (right click and choose "Save as") in the game's Game/DarkAge/Item directory. I uploaded a corrected installation file just now, so don't worry about it if you haven't downloaded the game yet.
Also, if you're having trouble because of the file size, you can download DAX in four pieces in this topic courtesy of Spyder. (Note this version requires that missing file above.)
And if that's still too much, I've decided to go ahead with a MIDI version, which should be available sometime soon.
Dark Age EX is complete! Modem users might be a tad discouraged with the download size, so I might consider releasing a MIDI version as well if there's significant demand.
For your viewing pleasure, I created a short Dark Age EX promo movie, available in the preview section. It's probably not what you're used to seeing, as it is entirely clay animation!
The Dark Age site now has its own domain name: http://darkagegames.net! Of course, the site is still hosted by Mystic Software and the old address will still work, but get in the habit of using the new name (it's more fun, anyway. Heh...)
Dark Age 2 has been out for just over a year! I've decided to lower the price for the full version CD by $1.50 and tweak shipping costs. Just in time for the holiday season! (Heh...)
As far as the site goes, I've added a links section where visitors can add their sites and see those added by others.
Not a whole lot this month. I did put up a couple of new screenshots in the Dark Age EX section, though. Also, some more minor Dark Age 2 fixes are available.
Here it is! The biggest update ever! (Heh...) Firstly, I've finally gotten around to PHP-ising the front page. Commenting is now open to news posts, which is linked to the current message board. So register already! I also replaced the old external poll and counter with my own coding.
Secondly, I thought the time was ripe to unveil a little preview of the (formerly) top secret Dark Age remake: Dark Age EX.
Finally, anyone who is having problems with Dark Age 2 running too slow can head to the download section and try out an alternate DLL that I should have put up a while ago (heh...).
The Dark Age 2 v1.1 upgrade patch is released! This patch fixes a few minor to mid sized bugs that I missed in the initial release. This patch is for the full version CD owners only. I originally intended to make one for the free demos as well, but all of the bugs fixed occurred after the point where the demos drop off.
And the surprise... as a way of saying thanks to full version buyers, I also added a few small things to the game, including three new spells and a sort of mini side quest near the end of the game for those seeking a true challenge (heh...).
A small Dark Age 2 upgrade patch is in the works, mainly to fix a few minor bugs. So if you've come across something not quite right (typos, misplaced solid/under tiles, etc.) in either demo or the full version, let me know on one of the forums and I'll fix it in the patch.
And as an added bonus, full version owners get a surprise... (heh...)
A lot has been going on lately.
First, I'm sure most have heard I've taken over management at The RPG
Code Shack.
I've also been playing around
with PHP. In fact, I just finished coding a new message
board for the site. It has all the features of the previous ad-less
boards and more!
01-01-2004
Nothing terribly exciting to
kick off the new year. I did add a small frequently asked questions page for Dark Age 2, though.
I'm sure many are wondering
what my next project will be. A Dark Age remake? Dark Age 3? Heh, I was
so used to routine that I almost started a new project as soon as I released
Dark Age 2. The truth is I'm not quite ready to start another game just
yet... although I have given it some thought.
By the way, congratulations
to those who beat Dark Age 2!
12-16-2003
Well, the contest results are in. Somewhat disappointing, though,
as I didn't receive the minimum five entries required to give out the
free CD. Still, I got some nice works. Check it out!
Also, after nearly a year of
(vanishing) ad-free message boards, I had to switch the Dark Age Message Board back to the old server.com one. Eh, its
ad-ridden but it works.
12-01-2003
And now for a change of pace:
announcing the Dark Age 2 Media
Contest! Enter to win a FREE copy of the Dark Age 2 full
version CD!
11-01-2003
I would like
to thank everyone for your feedback on Dark Age 2! And an
extra thanks to those providing the extra mirrors on the download page. (That was a ride the first
two days, eh? Heh...)
I think I'll
be laying low for a while. Of course I'll still be
checking my email/message boards as usual (just no new
mammoth projects for now...).
10-15-2003
The wait is
over... Dark Age 2 is released! Phew... it only took two
years and a month, too (heh...)
I believe
this is the first commercial endevor the Toolkit has seen
so far. I would like to thank anyone who is considering buying the full version. Really, thanks!
I couldn't think of a better reward after years of labor
than to have a finished product on the market. Of course,
you can download the free demo right now!
Have fun!
10-01-2003
Nothing in
particular to report right now... I might have a surprise
for you later in the month, though... (Heh...)
09-14-2003
Bah... the
message board disappeared again... so I got a new one.
09-01-2003
It's
official: Dark Age 2 will be a Toolkit 2 release. TK3
looks promising, but it has a long way to go... The game
runs just fine in 2.20b, anyway.
The preview section has received its largest
update in over a year: two new screenshots and a new
preview MP3 (*Gasp!*). Enjoy!
08-01-2003
Things are
shaping up pretty well. Give it a few more months...
(By the way,
in case you haven't noticed, the message board link was fixed a while back.)
07-01-2003
A change of
pace this month. I uploaded a movie of the Dark Age 2
battle system in action. Check it out in the preview section.
06-01-2003
Initial
attempts to run Dark Age 2 on TK3 have proved
unsuccessful. But considering TK3 is only in its alpha
state, that was to be expected. It is nice get a taste of
what we will eventually be able to do with it, though.
But for now, I'm sticking with version 2.
So the big
question is: will Dark Age 2 be a TK2 or TK3 release?
That depends on how TK3 shapes up before I finish the
game, as well as its (future) compatibility with a TK2
project. TK3 does have a few new features I can make use
of, but I'm satisfied with the way the game currently
runs in version 2, so if it comes down to it, I will use
that version.
05-12-2003
Good news and
bad news. Unfortunately, MrX had to drop out of the Dark
Age 2 music production scene. He has, however, mangaged
to produce several excellent MP3s up to this point that
will be featured in the game. Thanks again, MrX!
As for the
good news, Rueben, creator of The Fourth Dimension, is going to pick up where he left
off. If you want proof of his musical talent (or just a
really good game) try his game out.
Hmmm... I
guess its about time to put up another screenshot in the preview section as well.
05-01-2003
I discovered
a solution to TK2's lag problems. Buy a new computer!
Heh, I just got a new laptop. Seeing how some people had
problems getting the Toolkit to run under Windows XP, I
was a bit worried. Fortunately, the transition was
seemless (plus that Pentium 4M processor really cleans up
that board lag!).
I was going
to put up another Dark Age 2 screenshot. But I haven't
had much free time lately, so I didn't get around to it.
Maybe later.
04-01-2003
Dark Age 2
steadily moves toward completion. In fact, this month
marks a milestone. You know that one line in the preview section that says Dark Age 2 won't
be "done any time soon"? It has been upgraded
to read "it'll still be a while" (heh...).
The Dark Age
site moved to Mystic Software a year ago this month. Thanks go out to
Spyder for providing a fast and reliable host for all
this time!
03-01-2003
Heh, I'm
obviously running out of things to say in these
updates... (a recent lack of free time also doesn't
help). Nothing major for this month either. I did put a
new screenshot up in the preview section, however.
02-01-2003
That's right,
still working on Dark Age 2...
01-01-2003
A new message board is up! This one is much nicer than
that old server.com board. It's basically the same thing
with more features and no advertisements. I'm leaving the
old board up for a while in case you want to read the
old messages. There's no change in my Mystic Software forum, in case you were wondering.
I'm sure many
are wondering if 2003 will be the year that Dark Age 2 is
released. The truth is I still can't say for sure. It's
not an impossibility, though... I'd like to thank
everyone who has been following this project since I
first announced it 1 year and 3 months ago! And yes, I
managed to put another screen shot in the preview section.
12-01-2002
Well I
updated so much last month, I really don't have anything
left for this month... heh.
11-16-2002
Due to
overwelming demand, MrX and I have decided to release a
little preview MP3 from Dark Age 2's sound track. Heh,
while I was adding it to the preview section, I noticed a lot of what I had
there was old and stale. So, I did some touching up as
well.
11-01-2002
Seeing that
the word has been out on Dark Age 2 for over a year now,
I thought the time was right to give you a little preview
of the story
behind the game (that's right, these updates are
occasionally meaningful). Enjoy!
In case
you're wondering, recent play tests of Dark Age 2 show
over 7 hours of gameplay so far... and growing!
10-01-2002
Well, summer
is officially over, which means I won't have nearly as
much time for the Toolkit. Regardless, Dark Age 2 pushes
forward!
09-01-2002
I finished
Dark Age one year ago today. After a few days of
debugging, I created this site and made my first
appearance at the Toolkit message boards. It has been a
great year and I would like to say thanks to everyone who
has downloaded my game!
The future
looks even better with version 3 of the RPG Toolkit on
its way...
It would be
nice if I can finish Dark Age 2 by the original's second
anniversary, but I still can't say when it will be done
for sure. Much work is getting done on it, though. I put
up four new screenshots in the preview section.
The Fan Art section has received some nice
works so far (doesn't anyone like the good guys?). Keep
them coming!
08-01-2002
Dark Age 2
continues to come along nicely. There's nothing in
particular I want to report for this month except to
expect more surprises than I give credit for in the
preview (heh...).
07-01-2002
I haven't
added any new features to the site for a while, so I
thought the time was right for a new one. Introducing:
the Fan Art section! Check that section for more
details. If this gets feedback, it will become a
permanent part of the site.
In Dark Age 2
news, production is moving along steadily.
06-01-2002
Well, I've
been holding back on new Dark Age 2 screen shots for a
while, so I decided to put two new ones up in the preview
section. Enjoy! It looks like June will be a productive
month for Dark Age 2.
One final
thing. Mr X has graciously volunteered to do some music
for Dark Age 2. From what I've heard, it sounds pretty
good!
05-01-2002
First of all,
I'd like to congratulate the 40% who actually beat Dark
Age (heh...). April was another one of those months where
I didn't have much time for Dark Age 2. Unfortunately,
May looks like it will be more of the same. Some good
news though: so far, there is almost an hour's worth of
gameplay in Dark Age 2.
A few days
ago, I also put up a new single installation file for
Dark Age. This one shouldn't be missing any files.
04-21-2002
The Dark Age
site is now hosted by Mystic Software! Hopefully, this will be the last move for
a long time.
04-14-2002
Well, I'm
sure everyone has heard the fate of the Toolkit Zone by
now. As a result, I had to temporarily move this site
back to my old Angelfire account.
04-01-2002
A few people have been
having trouble getting Dark Age to work recently. I
created a patch that may solve the problems. There's more
info on it in the dowload section.
As for Dark Age 2, I've
manage to solve some serious speed issues with the battle
system that appeared with the latest version of the
Toolkit. Also the elimination of program size limits in
2.19b (thank you CBM!) has made some tasks a lot easier
and cleaner, which means slighly faster production. The
future looks bright... just not very near...
03-01-2002
Tile by tile, Dark Age 2
production is steadily moving along. That's right, I put
some screenshots up this time. These ones aren't tester
shots either; what you see here will most likely be in
the final game. As always, they're in the Dark Age 2 section.
02-01-2002
Work on Dark Age 2 has
been slow for the past few weeks. Sorry, no new
screenshots yet! I've been doing a lot of character
graphics lately. Soon, I'll have enough done to start on
the first playable sequence of the game. I've been very
busy lately, so it may be a little while though...
01-21-2002
The Dark Age site has
moved to the Toolkit Zone
Network! But, you
must already know that, since you're reading this. Other
than that, nothing major to report.
01-10-2002
A lot of things have been
happening lately. First of all, Dark Age has won the 2001
Special Award at TK Game Reviews! Heh, I was randomly surfing some
sites when I stumbled upon it (I guess I should visit the
main message board more often!). Read all about it and
other Toolkit game awards at their site.
As some of you may know,
I've been helping my brother, who goes by the name of
Sigurd, with his game he just released. I recommend
checking out DBZ: TCG even if you're not a fan of the
Dragon Ball Z series.
Finally, I've been playing
around with some tiles for Dark Age 2. Here's a sneak
preview.
01-01-2002
It has a name... Yes,
after some serious contemplation, I've decided to name my
current project Dark Age 2. Production is going great (at
the moment...). I managed to solve some major problems
I've been having. The battle system has been finished off
and upgraded to support two enemies. It now sits at
1,950+ lines, just below the interpreter's 2,000 line
limit. The menu system is done as well. Of course, I will
most likey make several modifications to both of these
during production. With the basics out of the way, I can
actually start working on gameplay itself, namely the
story and graphics. The Future Works section is now the
Dark Age 2 section and has been updated with new
screenshots and details.
12-01-2001
Hmm... it looks like the
chaotic characters dominated last month's poll. I'll keep
that in mind while writting the plot for my next game (I
really need to think of a name for it... I'm getting sick
of typing 'my next game'). I haven't had much time for
the Toolkit lately, but I managed to get two new
screenshots up in the Future Works section.
11-01-2001
I added a few new Dark Age
screen shots and a screen shot of my new battle system in
full screen mode. A few days ago, I put up an animated
gif that gives a taste of the special attacks in my next
game too. So, be sure to stop by the Future Works
section. I've also added a new feature to the site: The
Pointless Poll of the Month!
10-11-2001
Two screen shots of my
in-progress battle system for my next game are up. See
the Future Works section for more details. A few people
have been requesting that I make a character creation
tutorial. I'm not sure if I have the time right now, but
If you are wildly in favor of this, let me know on the
message board.
