The best way to learn to make character sprites is by looking at professional games. If you're looking for taller characters, take a look at those from Chrono Trigger. Some good medium sized ones can be found in Final Fantasy 3 and Breath of Fire 2. And if you're into the big head little body types, look at the Lufia series and the early Final Fantasies.
